Chapter 1: In Which the Crew Travel to the South Island

There are several ways to get from the North Island to the South Island, one of the most common is to take a Ferry, this is especially common if you want to take a car with you. Thus, a few days after Christmas (with a job lined up for January 3rd) all of Renee's stuff went in the car along with the Little's camping stuff (and Uncle Tim, Aunt Kc, Cousin Rory, Cousin Alvey, Moose, Petunia, Elgamore and Renee (and Ingrid!)) and got on the Ferry! During most of the Ferry ride the cousins played a very fun game called Glory to Rome though a short trip up to the observation deck was also had and a few pictures were taken.
“First” view of the South Island!

 Woo car!

Then there was another drive to get to a farm where the Little's were staying before attempting to climb one of the big mountains nearby. The farm had a few plum trees and Renee ate many plums and played Ingrid outside, very loudly and maybe (probably) scared some sheep. Unfortunately only Aunt KC thought to take pictures of this so they are forthcoming...later....sometime....in the future.... that night there was a brief adventure to the beach (hello Ocean!) where Petunia vanquished the evil seaweed serpent while riding the noble steed Moose

and more Glory to Rome!. Then there was morning and Renee (and Moose and Petunia and Elgamore and Ingrid) departed the wonderful company of the Littles to begin the long adventure to the job in Haast.
On a bus again! (this becomes a common theme for the next few days)

This bus took the crew to Christchurch where they spent a very quite New Years Eve. (P.S. Happy New Year!!!) Notable during the bus ride was the gentleman who did not use the toilet at the last stop before our final arrival and though it would be alright to berate the driver for not stopping for him and threatening to “piss on the bus”. The poor driver had to attempt to explain to the angry man that he needed to wait before finally relenting that there was ONE place he could possibly stop but it would be another 45 minutes. The man accepted this after some of the other passengers got involved though seemed to have trouble telling time and approached the driver again and when the bus finally did stop instead of going inside like he was asked the man just went on the side of the road, which is illegal for the the bus rider. It was an awkward situation but thinking back is almost funny. There was much wandering of Christchurch which was hit very hard by earthquakes in 2011 and is still rebuilding. Here's what Renee thought:
It was stunning to see how much destruction is still evident. I was wandering around thinking that all the effort that's gone into rebuilding really hasn't amounted to much until I saw some massive piles of rubble (which I, unfortunately did not think to take a picture of) and realized that before buildings could be built the broken bits had to be removed. After that realization I was much more impressed with the work, although there is still a whole lot that needs to be done. The other thing that I was very struck by was the vast amount of public art that is EVERYWHERE. It felt as though Christchurch was saying, “hey we know our city looks really broken right now, but we can do better, we will do better, promise.” And it was really nice to see these bright splashes of color a midst bleak grey concrete rubble and dirt everywhere. I don't plan to spend any more time in Christchurch on this trip, although I am glad to have had a brief visit and am very curious and excited to see what it will look like in several more years (pending another earthquake...)

Chapter 8: In Which Moose Visits Somes Island

A note: I know you're all anxious to know what's going on RIGHT NOW for me, the answer is not much, I work and spend a lot of time reading/writing/watching T.V. and wandering around. I will provide a full blog post about Haast soon, but in the meantime, enjoy reading the next 3 posts of other things!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Somes Island has been used for many different types of quarantine (including a leper at one point in time) and other random uses in New Zealand's history, although it is now just a cool place to visit and is more focused on maintaining native specieseseses of plants and animals. Although not a native Moose was allowed on the island after strict checking to be sure he didn't accidentally bring in any other exotics and the promise that he would not eat any of the native wild life (like Penguins, Tuatara, Weta, etc.) The ferry ride to the island was uneventful and kind of rainy which made pictures....not taken...Moose spent the ride wanting to be sea sick but keeping it together. Upon arrival he went with Renee, Uncle Tim and Aunt KC to the reception hut to check for exotic plant life brought in by accident and the possibility of mice (no moose, thank goodness). Then other friends were met and all walked up to the houses which were built for the families of workers in the 1960s (probably; moose was more concerned with the scenery than listening to the lesson). That evening there was a bit of exploring of the “museum” of the old quarantine building.

Moose though it would be interesting to see what it felt like on the other side of the bars where he would have been quarantined up to 10(ish) years ago but was a little scared he would be left behind so quickly re-joined Renee and the others to explore more of the island.

Further exploring revealed sheep! Which all had been cautioned not to pet since the ram is quite possessive, and while Moose believes himself to be more than capable of handling a lone ram Renee reminded him to be respectful of his surroundings and the “native” species.

Near the top of the small hill which is most of the island are remnants of bunkers from WWII? Which were used to keep a look out for planes by USA soldiers?? Moose found the bunkers to be a little spooky and very echo-y. Renee thought it would be interesting to play trombone in one of them but only with really good ear-plugs.

On the way back the wind was blowing which was good since most of the island's power comes from this windmill. (If you listen closely you can hear the REALLY COOL sound it made)

The sunset was fairly spectacular as was the night walk which introduced Moose to 3 Tuataras and many several GIANT Weta but because of the dark there were not many pictures taken.

Just these of the night Wellington skyline

and this which we believe came from a rather startled Tuatara

The next morning everything was packed up and left at the “reception cabin” before Uncle Tim, Aunt KC, Renee and Moose circumnavigated the island on the walking path. About halfway around Renee got JUST too close to a nest and was attacked by a pair of seagulls who knocked the hat off her head and poo-ed on it, for good measure. Moose had to be reminded of his oath to let the wildlife be since the attack startled Renee and made her have to clean her hat.
The ride back was, again, uneventful and although a nice day there were no pictures taken.

Extra! Roses are Red...

And a whole lot of other colors as well!! Petunia accompanied Renee to the Rose garden that is part of the botanical gardens in Wellington. The gardens are quite expansive and it is possible to walk along them from Wellington CBD all the way up to where the cable car stops. Not in the mood for quite the walk Renee simply took some time to stop and smell the roses...and take some pictures with Petunia (who felt quite at home).

Chapter 7 : In Which Petunia Gets Nerd/Geek Points

One of the things that Petunia has really enjoyed is all of the geekry that she has been able to experience while being here in "Middle Earth." As many of you are probably aware The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug opened December 13th in the US, Petunia was able to join Renee (though she sneaked in, shh) seeing it on December 12th, New Zealand time, which means December 11th in the US. As extra special bonus points (not that they were needed mind you) they saw it at The Embassy theater which is where the premiers that happened in Wellington took place. Although this Hobbit movie didn't premier in Wellington it was still exciting for Petunia and Renee. They found the movie to be quite enjoyable, especially the parts with the dragon!!
Also Lee Pace!!!!
They also visited The Embassy for a special screening of the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special on November 24th. It. Was. Amazing. The crowd was filled with like-minded individuals (Whovians) who were not shy about expressing themselves with cheering, laughing, gasping, etc. Petunia really enjoyed being in such a crowd, it made the special that much more...special and exciting!

Before going to the special on Sunday, Renee took Petunia to a party celebrating Doctor Who that she learned about through the board game group she has been meeting with every other week. She even made a special "T.A.R.D.I.S." pie for the occasion!

Besides the fireworks (which were REALLY CLOSE and STARTLINGLY AWESOME) one of the highlights of the evening was an accidental projection onto a neighbor's house.

It is good to be a geek in a geek community :D

XP: Years since The Hobbit was published and years since Doctor Who Started: 126

P.S. Moose also received many geek points by going with Renee when she played Advanced Civilization for almost 8 hours...it was surprisingly quite fun though the game didn't *actually* finish :P
